The Comfort I Didn’t Know I Was Missing


I didn’t notice when my days started blending into each other. It wasn’t dramatic, no big life change or breakdown. Just a slow shift. Work, home, phone, sleep. Repeat. Even things I used to enjoy started feeling like habits instead of experiences.

One night, I was mindlessly scrolling (like I usually do when I don’t want to think too much), and I came across these Harry Potter gifts. Normally, I’d just like it and move on, but something about it made me pause.

Maybe it was the nostalgia. Maybe it was the reminder of a time when things felt simpler, when I could sit for hours lost in a story without worrying about emails or deadlines. I didn’t overthink it. I just ordered one.

A Small Moment That Felt Surprisingly Personal

When it arrived, I almost forgot about it. It sat on my desk for a day before I finally opened it. That evening, I decided to light it, not because I had a plan, but because I didn’t feel like doing anything else.

And something about that moment stayed with me.

I remember sitting there, no TV on, no notifications buzzing, just that soft glow and a quiet room. I even played the Harry Potter soundtrack in the background, which felt a bit silly at first, but then oddly comforting.

It wasn’t anything extraordinary, but it felt… calm. Like I had pressed pause on everything without needing a reason.

Slowing Down Without Forcing It

After that, I started doing it more often. Not every day, not as a strict routine, but whenever I felt overwhelmed or just tired of everything feeling the same.

Some evenings I’d just sit there doing nothing. Other times I’d pick up a book or write a few random thoughts in my notes app. It didn’t feel like I was trying to “fix” anything. It just felt like giving myself a break.

At some point, I realized I was actually looking forward to these moments. That surprised me. I hadn’t felt that way about my evenings in a long time.

The Little Addition That Completed the Space

A few weeks later, I wanted to add something else to that space I had unintentionally created for myself. That’s when I found these heart shaped candles.

They weren’t loud or over-the-top, just simple and warm. I liked that. It felt like they fit into what I had going on without trying too hard.

When I placed one next to my usual setup and lit it, it changed the feel of the room in a subtle way. It made everything feel a bit softer. More intentional.

It’s strange how something so small can make a space feel more like your own.

How It Started Affecting Everything Else

I didn’t expect this to change anything beyond those quiet moments, but it did. Slowly.

I started sleeping better, not because I set a routine, but because my mind wasn’t racing as much at night. I wasn’t ending my day with screens or stress anymore. Instead, I had this small window where things felt still.

Even my mornings felt different. I wasn’t immediately reaching for my phone or feeling drained before the day even began.

Friends who came over noticed it too. Not the candles specifically, but the overall vibe. A few of them actually asked me what I’d changed because the space felt calmer.

The funny thing is, I didn’t feel like I’d done anything major.

Why These Small Shifts Matter More Than We Think

We’re so used to thinking that change has to be big to matter. New habits, big goals, drastic routines. But honestly, this wasn’t any of that.

It was just a small decision. Clicking on something that reminded me of a simpler time. Lighting a candle instead of scrolling for another hour. Sitting with my thoughts instead of distracting myself from them.

And somehow, that was enough to shift things.

I still have busy days. I still get overwhelmed. Nothing about my life drastically changed. But now I have something I didn’t have before, a way to slow things down when I need to.

It’s not perfect or consistent, and maybe that’s why it works.

It feels real.
